YES I KNOW OH GOD uhum.I’m gonna use your reply as an excuse to rant about these two, excuse me. XD; Addressing two things that really bother me about many Mello/Near fics—using Mello’s frustration for angry make-outs/sex and making Mello out to be such a sore loser that he abuses Near every time he gets a higher score.
Mello eventually getting extremely frustrated, that’s completely legit—but, uh, the odds of that turning into hot make-out scenes or something? Not quite so likely. If he was frustrated enough to do something extremely rash, without thinking of the consequences, he likely would have hit Near out of pure frustration. It wouldn’t make him feel better, no; in fact, despite how frustrated and pissed off he is, he probably would’ve felt like a dick. Mello’s is intelligent enough, I believe, to know picking on someone weaker than him wont make him any better—because, in the end, Near’s test scores are still higher. Bullies typically have a pretty damn stupid motive for doing what they do, and if Mello was using the test scores as an excuse to bully Near, then I would have zero respect for him, because that is just pathetic.
Which is why I don’t think he would do something like that. If Near frustrated him that much and caused him that much stress, he’d be more likely to avoid Near than outwardly seek him. I find the glaring at Near from afar more likely than full on bullying. Near frustrates the hell out of him, yes—but any satisfaction he gets out of beating a small, frail boy to a pulp would be short-lived, because it doesn’t change anything. Many have pointed out that Mello is a pretty damn calm individual most of the time, and the times where he does lose it usually involve Near—this implies that he is a pretty easy-going and not the sore loser he’s tended to be portrayed as. What he hates more than anything is that he tries, and tries, and tries, but nothing ever changes and, in his mind, he knows it never will. I can see why this would be pretty damn frustrating to him when he is being pushed to be the best he can be, but every time his score is lower, it’s as if that meant nothing.
And, that’s another thing. Near is said to have “honestly liked Mello.” Not only does Near respect Mello’s intelligence and sees the two of them as equal, he honestly liked Mello. Think about that—if Mello got pissed at every little thing and beat the shit out of Near all the time, would Near really hold that much respect for him? No, absolutely not; he’d likely think of Mello as little more than a pathetic child who is seeking attention. Whether Near is one to hold grudges is up for debate, I suppose, but I don’t think he could ever respect or “honestly like” someone who did little more than abuse him every time he didn’t win. Therefore, although he and Mello didn’t necessarily “get along,” Mello most likely did not harass Near in the ways most people assume.
I just…like, I’ve read and enjoyed several fics that had the bullying and harassment as part of the plot, but…I just can’t see Near really liking Mello after that. But, in the series, he does like Mello, or respects him a great deal. At times during the Kira case, even though Mello was working against Near for quite some time, Near would often grin or smirk whenever he was impressed with Mello’s plans. Mello was hazardous to their plans at times, but even then, Near would just grin at the things Mello did because he finds Mello’s actions so interesting. I just can’t see Near being that way with someone who treated him like shit. I can’t, and I realize that other authors may not share my views, and that’s fine—but there’s a vast difference between forgiving someone and liking them. Could Near forgive Mello for abusing him in their past? Yeah, maybe; I don’t think it’d be an immediate thing, no. Do I think he’d like Mello after that, or particularly want him as an ally? Absolutely not. He could use Mello as a valuable asset for his intelligence, maybe, but I don’t think he’d like Mello all that much, really, if he had abused him. Maybe it’d be out of character for Near to dwell on such feelings, but that’s not an easy thing to recover from or forget.
I like the idea of them being close, but I don’t think that would happen if Mello had treated him like shit. If Near isn’t so keen on opening up to people in the first place, he sure as hell wouldn’t do so for someone who abused him.
